Notify first and argue later

The instinct is to wait until the cost is known before saying anything. Most contracts want the opposite: an early notice that the event has happened, with the money to follow. A protective notice costs a paragraph and keeps the entitlement alive; waiting for certainty can time-bar the whole claim. If it turns out to be nothing, the notice has cost you nothing.
