Confirm every instruction in writing the day it arrives
A verbal on the scaffold and a marked-up drawing in an email are both change, and both evaporate if nobody writes them down. Confirm each one back in the form the contract asks for, with a date, before the day is out, while everyone still agrees what was said. The confirmation turns a variation the other side can later forget into one they have already acknowledged.
