Get it signed before the works start
A subcontract executed after the works begin is negotiated from weakness, because the subcontractor is already on site and knows it. The intention to paper it later rarely survives a live job. Chase the signature before the first day on site; if the programme cannot wait, get a short, properly drafted order signed quickly rather than starting on nothing.
