We've bought software and nobody uses it

You are here: The spend is visible in the accounts; the non-use is not.

What's happening?

It was bought with intent - the estimating package, the document system, the dashboard everyone saw demonstrated. The team gave it a fortnight, went back to the spreadsheets that already worked, and nobody announced the retreat. The licences renew on schedule, because renewal is automatic and admitting defeat is not.

Tools fail for reasons nobody writes down: wrong fit for how the work actually runs, no time carved out for the switch, no owner, or double-entry with the old way that made the new way a tax. Left unexamined, the renewals keep paying for the original decision instead of revisiting it - and the next purchase repeats the pattern, because the lesson was never captured.

The review is keep, fix or kill, tool by tool: what you own, what is actually used, what the work needs, and what it would take to close the gap - which is often less than another purchase.

The solution

What you own, what you use, and a decision per tool.
